George Street | Edinburgh May 31/76.
My Dear Mr. Lewes
I have the pleasure of announcing the safe arrival of another batch of Deronda and I have instructed Printers to try and have proofs ready to post you tomorrow. I am very anxious to read this thrilling portion which I could not resist from running my eye through.
Mr. Simpson is attending to your wishes about the Casts of the Woodcuts for your new Volume. Mr. Simpson has also handed me the enclosed cheque for £100 from the proprietors of the Melbourne Argus 487 for permission to print Daniel Deronda in its columns. They remitted cheque for the additional £100 last month which makes payment in full of the arrangement made by Mr. Simpson on your behalf and is now discharged by us by enclosed cheque for £100 on Coutts and Co. Hoping both cheques will reach you safely believe me
Ever yours truly
(Signed) William Blackwood
P.S. When my Uncle has got his Oxford anxiety off his mind I have no doubt you will see him often and speedily. This is the day and a nice "Derby day" for Jack too. He will know result of exam tomorrow.
G. H. Lewes Esq.
