My Dear Mr. Lewes
My Uncle wrote to you yesterday enclosing a specimen page for Middlemarch, but it did not please quite and Mr. Simpson and I have been laying our heads together to design another. 367 We have we think hit upon one more adapted for the scheme and which also does not disturb the original calculations of outlay and income though it bulks more. I send you specimens by Book Post and the part will contain 214 pp. which quantity with the quality ought surely to satisfy the public they have got their money's worth. If any other shape or type strikes you as better will you let me know and we will endeavour to carry out your wishes as far as is possible.
I also send you by Book Post a specimen Book from which you will most likely be able to select the colour for the paper cover. I think the one you thought of was a delicate lilac shade and very pretty it would look.
My best regards to Mrs. Lewes and I trust she is recovering from her severe indisposition.
