My dear Lewes,
I have to apologise for not having forwarded the inclosed to you sooner after your return. I trust the contents are not such as will have suffered by keeping. I was delighted to hear of your and Mrs. Lewes's return to this country in renovated health and spirits -- and both determined for writing! I don't think I have any literary news to give, no special feature in sales of the Physiology or the Mill on the Floss to record, though the former moves steadily and there is still a little demand for the latter. More than 6,000 copies of a guinea and a half novel sold is a success which I am pretty confident has not been attained since the days of the Waverley Novels.
