My dear Mr. Lewes
I heard from Mr. Langford that he had the pleasure of meeting you and that you had been making enquiry about the Cabinet Edition of Mrs. Lewes's works. On reading it I felt very guilty for not having written to you or Mrs. Lewes some news of the sales since my Uncle saw you and reported, but my omission arose not from having forgotten but from the press of work requiring immediate attention I have had during my Uncle's absence abroad. However Mr. Simpson has presented me with a state of the sales and I can no longer postpone enclosing it to you which I do with pleasure as we consider it highly satisfactory.
The sales too of the other editions have been keeping steadily up to the average which under the terrible depression and dulness of trade is very assuring that they do not clash with one another, that there was a decided want for the Cabinet edition and that it was brought out about the right period.
When may we look forward to seeing or hearing of another fascinating book from Mrs. Lewes to give the series of her books another fresh start as well as delighting the public with something to read and think over? I hope before long that my Uncle on his homeward journey will be gladdened by hearing of it from yourselves in person when he halts in London. I expect him to get there early next month and one of his first pleasures will be I know to see you and Mrs. Lewes. My last reports of him have been much more satisfactory and he had got back to Florence, the change there from Rome having benefitted him greatly. All during his stay in Rome he had been ill having caught cold on the journey there. But I trust that when he gets home he will find he has derived more benefit from his travels and rest from work than he did when away.
What are your summer plans? Hoping this finds you and Mrs. Lewes pretty strong and well and with kind regards believe me
