My dear Lewes
Thanks for your note about Johnston's Chemistry. I am glad to find your opinions coincide with our own here that it is better to reserve altogether the author's additions for another impression.
The rest of the article on "Food and Drink" is rather short for the next number of the Physiology and we want 8 pp. more to make it of sufficient bulk. Will you be good enough to let us have them as soon as possible. You have had the proof of Digestion [and] Indigestion for some days I believe. I am glad to tell you the Physiology is selling very satisfactorily. A good feature in the sale is that number 1 is constantly asked for.
John has "Only a Pond." 431 It will be Sunday reading for him, I have little doubt. He is off to golf, for his Saturday's amusement. Langford writes with his usual philosophical calmness, in the middle of a letter filled with details of little consequence, which has just come, "Mudie has just made up his number of Adam Bede to 1000. Simpkins have sold their subscribed number and have had 12 today. Everyone is talking of the book." Your allusion to G. E's new tale excites strong interest.

A copy of Mr. Tate's pamphlet 432 has come to us for G.E. I send it you though I daresay he will not care to see it. John will be in London probably the end of next month or beginning of May.
