My Dear Mrs. Lewes
I am happy to tell you I had a much better and satisfactory report of my Uncle last night both from himself and my Aunt. Much of his discomfort and trouble has been caused by indigestion and tendency to asthma and a very strict diet has been prescribed him. I trust he will attend to it.
What answer shall we send to enclosed regarding Theophrastus Such? Your other works have I think been mostly all translated into French already. We have never before had any communications from the writer of it but if you entertain his proposals would first make enquiries about him in London.
We are having lovely Autumn weather now and some of the Scotch harvest will be got in pretty well.
I hope you duly received our letter of the 3rd with enclosures. We have better reports of sales from London this morning and Simpkins ordered 156 "Mill on the Floss" on Saturday and 22 Theophrastus went off during end of week. We shall soon have to reprint "The Sayings." Are you agreeable to Mr. Maynes [i.e. Main's] adding to it from Deronda and Theophrastus Such; both are I think admirably suited for it and it will be a labour of love to him.
