My dear Mrs. Lewes
The news you send me in your very friendly and cordial letter of yesterday did surprise me but I am very happy to hear it and I wish you heartily much joy and happiness. From what you tell me of Mr. Cross
I am sure he will be to you all that you could desire and his family is I know an exceedingly clever and nice one.
It is rather strange my hearing this news of your future happiness from you this morning as for some days past you have been often in my thoughts. I had written to Langford asking him to send me some news of sales and in reply heard that during the last month we sold nearly 1600 volumes of the cheap editions of your works which considering business is very dull I think is very good and comforting. I wish he had sent me the particulars but he did not do so.
I thank you for your kind wishes for myself and I am happy to say I have been feeling much better lately and the strain of work is coming easier to me as time passes and the days become brighter. I shall be very happy to write to you in the old way when you return in August and hoping you will enjoy your stay abroad and with all good wishes for your happiness believe me
