My dear Mrs. Lewes
I have been wishing to write to you for many days past but with getting Maga to press and attending Committees of our Conservative Candidates for the City and County my time has been fully occupied and business has been rather neglected. However as I feel it is the duty of every patriotic man to do his utmost to defeat Mr. Gladstone and those who agree with him I hope you will pardon the delay.
I am glad you overcame your compunctions as to giving me trouble about the Statement of your works for the last year and when I saw that for 1878 I am not surprised at your giving it the preference and I do not know why our bookkeeper prepared the one for 1879 in a different form. Your wishes for the future will be attended to and I hope to have the pleasure of sending you as many more as satisfactory statements as the enclosed amended one for 1879. The sales for this year have so far opened well and are very encouraging. You were kindly anxious on our behalf about the stock on hand of Theophrastus but I had no fears and I am happy to tell you that the stock on hand is now reduced to about 35 copies, if as many, as I have had no return of it from Pater Noster Row since last month.
I was very glad to hear a good report of your health from Mr. Langford and he would tell you we had finished our heavy and anxious task all pleasantly. It was indeed a relief to have it finished but as I have a very uphill task before me the anxiety and strain of the work makes life very different for me to what it has been. I hope you think the Magazine is keeping up to the old mark. I was very pleased at getting Palander's Narrative 376 and "the Saturday" of last week made a very good article out of it for their own columns and called attention to the paper in "Blackwood." The new number will be ready to post you tomorrow if not to-night but it is rather political. I often wonder if you would be disposed to write something for old Maga and I should be so pleased if you would. With kindest regards and hoping this finds you well believe me
