My dear Mrs. Lewes
I have not had the pleasure of writing to you for a long time because I had nothing to trouble you with [in] a letter beyond what my Uncle had told you. Now however the inclosed Treasury order for a small sum of money on Colonial Sales of Foreign Editions of your works gives me the opportunity, as it requires your signature as George Eliot as well as our own to get the money. We have not had one for a very long time and I suspect the late Government must have pocketed several sums. It is some time now since we heard any news of you and Mr. Lewes and I have often wondered how you have been liking your Country quarters. I hope well, and that the air and quiet life have suited you both.
I have had a very jolly summer and am now well and sound though I have never been away from here for more than ten days and that twice only, but business has been lively and my Uncle's health and spirits have been better than I have seen him for several years. Long may he continue so I trust. I think he told you about my doings with The Fife Light Horse Yeomanry and how the Colonel, that mighty Nimrod Jack Thomson, and self and others had suffered from effects of sun, but it had splendid results and made me a new man, so I expect to enjoy some good hunting this coming season.
I am very happy to tell you that Middlemarch goes tripping along most gaily and the 2000 reprinted at end of July are all gone but a dozen or two and we have just reprinted another 2000 the first batch of which goes to London tomorrow. Jubal and Spanish Gypsy have also been selling well since last reported along with your other novels for the season of the year. I hope that your new work has been making as good progress in your hands and that we shall soon be hearing something more from you about it. . . . Post hour is up so I must conclude and with best remembrances to Mr. Lewes, believe me
