My Dear Mrs. Lewes
The Birthday book is now ready for binding and all but the colour of cloth was arranged for before our good old friend Simpson left us. As I know you are very particular about such matters I send you specimens of what we think will least offend you and yet be very attractive to the retail bookseller and his customers. The designs for side and back stamp are very novel and will not I hope startle you too much, but from its nature and for its purpose it required to be very ornate.
We shall be glad to have it back with your approval as soon as convenient as I have delayed in sending it off thinking you would be here very soon, but I hear no word of your Northern visit. I hope you are not breaking down in your good intention of coming to visit my Uncle in his Fife home. From your last letter to him you indicated I might have some sales to report to you and I have now the pleasure of enclosing statement for last six months. They are pretty good but dulness of trade has told on them as it has on everything else I fear.
My Uncle I rejoice to tell you continues regaining health and strength steadily from all the accounts I get and they are all enjoying the lovely weather we are having. Hoping it will be kind to you when you come North and with best regards to Mr. Lewes from whom I expect to hear
