My dear Mrs. Lewes
My Uncle came home on Monday with, I am distressed to say, a very sharp attack of bronchitis upon him. All last night and yesterday he suffered a great deal but I am thankful to say that he was a great deal easier and better when I left him about an hour ago and I trust that the improvement will continue. The bitter cold wind that there was all last week at St. Andrews has struck into him and he ought never to have exposed himself to it but he would not listen to Mrs. B's advice and warning. It is most vexatious as he had been so very much better and the attack will I fear greatly weaken him, but if we get the inflamation lessened his recuperative powers are wonderfully good yet and I hope he will soon be about again and able to start on his London visit.
He quite agreed with me about accepting Baron Tauchnitz' offer on your behalf for £50 as we are not likely to have a sale abroad that would be so advantageous. Accordingly I have written to Mr. Williams 235 accepting offer. Van Druten declines our terms for translation and Bohn reduces his offer from £20 to £10 as it is not a story. I inclose the letters and one from Dr. Lehman in answer to a former one that I replied to. I rather like the tone of Dr. Lehman's letter and if he is a publisher and agrees to offer a liberal sum I should advise your accepting it. 236 Bohn's offer you will I suppose decline although I fancy his translation would be Dutch.
By book post I have at last the pleasure of sending you specimens of proposed binding some of which will I hope meet with your approval. We like 1 and 2 we like best, and you must only return the one you select and if you desire any alterations will you let us know? Could you please return it tomorrow?
I am happy to tell you that Mudie has written from Rome ordering 500 to start with and our traveler took orders for 55 in Oxford yesterday which is very good.
