My dear Mrs. Lewes
In terms of our amended agreement of October 3/79 for [Theophrastus] I have the pleasure of enclosing you cheque £400- in full of the copies printed as stated to you at that date. We have still 97 copies in stock of this 10/6 edition but I have little doubt they will gradually disappear from our shelves as Mr. Langford reports to me that we sold 38 in London during December and I am only annoyed to find that the Scotch sale has so fallen away as we have only sold 3 since September. I cannot quite make it out as our sales at first here were particularly good and the book was so very popular all over Scotland. I hope that by Easter or just after that we shall be able to make a start with the Cabinet edition of it.
On looking through some letters laid aside by my good Uncle I found the enclosed the other day and it was I suppose the original "copy" of Title page for Theophrastus and you may like to preserve it along with the rest of the M.S.S. I was very happy to hear a good account of you from dear old Langford last week and your cordial reception of him pleased and gratified him much. It was also gratifying to me to hear from him of the deep interest that you take in my future welfare and your warm anxiety for me in the onerous duties I have to perform and I thank you very heartily as encouragement from you is very reassuring.
I have had a nasty attack of influenza which has made me very useless and miserable since New Year's day but I am getting better now and hope to be quite fit for that horrible valuation the details for making which will be all ready about end of the month. I shall not fail to let you know when I am well through it. Mrs. John Blackwood and her daughter came over last week and are wonderfully well but are daily feeling more and more conscious of the change that has come over their life. Your kind expressions were very comforting to them. Believe me

P.S. On rereading my letter I see I forgot to mention to you that the yearly statement of Sales of your works is in course of preparation and as soon as it is ready I hope to write to you with checque for the Royalties due.
