My dear Mrs. Lewes
My Uncle was very pleased at receiving your most kind and sympathetic letter and he hopes soon to write you again himself. Yesterday he got downstairs to the drawing room and is no worse for the change of air and scene and I trust now his convalescence will progress a little more rapidly although we should be very thankful to see he has thrown off the attack as well as he has. He is very cheery on the whole and my little news about "Theophrastus" quite brightens him up, and to-day I had some very good sales to report to him, Mr. Langford having written to order 500 copies to be sent off by to-day's Steamer as Mudie had sent for another 100 yesterday and during the day they had sold other 44 copies which left them with only 87 copies in stock at Paternoster Row. As I anticipated this demand we had sent off 200 copies on Monday which they would receive this morning and we have other 250 coming in from the Binder [To Ship] this evening so they would not run short to-day.
We have ordered paper to reprint again as soon as we deem it advisable and I shall take care that the corrections you wish made are attended to. Your letter with them was not in time for the second edition the number printed of which was 1575 and from enclosed Memo you will see half the edition are sold. I congratulate you heartily on the success and I hope it is cheering you as much as it does my uncle and whatever the reviewers may choose to write about it we have the more substantial proof that the public are well satisfied to receive such an admirable work from you.
We think we like "The Times" review the best of any we have seen. 269 When you have time to write we shall be glad to hear how you are and if you are deriving benefit from the country. Believe me
