George St. Edinburgh | October 3/79.
My dear Mrs. Lewes
As my Uncle is far from well and has been told by his medical adviser to quit his desk he sends me the enclosed letter to forward to you and desires me to write you the business one he was unable to overtake yesterday.
The accompanying memorandum will show you that 6190 copies have been printed of "Theophrastus Such" of which there seems to have been about 350 on hand when the balance was prepared, but reckoning these as sold which they will be leaves, after deducting Presentation Copies and 25th books, 5828 to be accounted for to you which at the lordship of 3/- per copy fixed upon would make £874.4.0d but as the sales have gone much beyond our expectation we propose to increase your payment to one thousand pounds (£1000) which will we hope prove satisfactory to you and of this thousand we now enclose draft on London for £600 the rest we shall pay in January next. During last month sales have been very quiet but I hope they will revive this month.
My Uncle took a bad turn last week but on Monday last when I left him I thought him better and that he was throwing it off and I am very distressed it does not seem to be so. However he is pretty cheerful and I hope soon to send you a better report of him. I trust that you continue well yourself and that you have been able to enjoy the week of fine weather we have had. Believe me for Partner and self
Ever Yours Sincerely
William Blackwood and Sons.
Mrs. M. E. Lewes.
