My dear Sir
I have the pleasure to inclose a cheque for two months' salary. The accounts of the demand for Adam Bede are very gratifying, and there can be little doubt but that edition number 2 will be out of print very soon. We have got the type of one volume standing, 445 and have ordered the remainder to be set up again immediately. When the public attention is once fairly attracted to such a book its sale must be very great. I have not heard of a single person who has read it who has not expressed perfect satisfaction with it. Syme the eminent Surgeon 446 here and Professor Simpson 447 are as warm in their eulogy of it as Theodore Martin, so that we may calculate on every reader who is attracted to the book by the Times still further extending it's reputation.
I had a letter from Mr. Crawley 448 two days ago soliciting an increase of salary. We have always entertained a favourable opinion of his ability and exertions for the business -- and understood that he has given you perfect satisfaction. We have therefore raised his salary to £120 a year.
