Dear Papa,
I am much obliged to you for the letter you sent me which gave me much pleasure. I have told Mrs. M'fcller about the magic wand, but I think it will be better to leave it, till you come, as then you can do it with her or one of us. Today we are going to bathe, in the big lake, that is to say those who can swim, though perhaps we shall all go.
Wish Mamma many happy returns 316 for me, and let her provide herself with a present out of it.
I have commenced a collection of flowers, which are pressed and dried. I hope you will come with us on the voyage, though I suppose you do not know yet. You are very popular among the boys, and I heard the little baby! say you were "si gentil et dr'f4le." We are getting on very well, as always. I hope your head is well. Give my love to the chicks and kiss them for me, and tell them that we have been to Berne to a place where all the animals and Birds of the Alps are exhibited. There are also two L'e4mmergeier, 317 of whom no doubt you have often heard, which are alive and the female is sitting on the eggs. There are also a good many animals representing scenes from "Reineke Fuchs," such as his hanging, his killing the hare etc. Also three skating hedgehogs, one of whom has tumbled down. I long for winter to come back and yet I like summer, though I'm sure I don't know which I really like best. Give my love to Nursie when you see her and ask her why she doesn't write to either of us, as we have not had any letters for some time. General Allemandi has never written anything to us, so I suppose he has either forgotten us, or not cared for our company.
Jos'e9 is gone to Brazil, at least I don't know if he has started, but he's been living with an uncle in Paris, and he will not come back any more. There will be a small party of relations all English, the cousin of Guppy and the mother of the two Youngs as well as you are coming. Most likely we are going to Italy to Milan, but that is not sure.
I have nothing particular to say so with Love to all and plenty of Kisses I remain Dear Pater meus
