Hofwyl 2 October. 1857.
Dear Papa
I hope your head is quite well, and that you had a good passage home. Bertie 335 is getting on very well, and likes the place very much. My botanical season is of course now at an end though there are plenty of butterflies still. In the winter I shall have however plenty of work with my plants. Tomorrow there is some sort of a festival at Bern so we are going there, if the weather is fine. We have therefore not much to do this evening, so I take the opportunity of writing to you. Will you tell Nursie when you see her, not to forget my letter, that is to say if she has received it? I wrote to her September 6th. We feel already the effects of near winter, as the evenings now are very dark. I had last week on Monday and Tuesday, attacks of tooth-ache. The Saturday before, I had had my teeth stopped at Bern, but this old rascal, would ache on and on. At last it plagued me so much, that I determined to have him out, and out he came under the hands of the doctor of Buchsee. 336 . . .
Are you now in London or where are you? Please give me an account of your proceedings, and write as soon as possible as we are very dull without any letters. Give my love to all at home, kiss Miss Lewes 337 for me, as well as Mamma, chicks, etc. Also my love to Nursie, Grandmamma, Mrs. Owen Jones, and tell her I will write to her when she has written to Charlie.
With love and many kisses, I Remain, Dear Papsy
Your affectionate Son
Rex Ranarum.
N.B. Given under my hand this day. October 2, 1857.
