Durban 7 October | 1864.
Dear Pater,
I have got a letter to answer, and am short of news, so that I can't favour you with a long epistle. My next I shall write three months hence, when I come back from my second trip up country. I am not going up alone as originally intended, but a fellow passenger per "Damietta," is coming with me as my partner. His name is Cronin, and his Father is a homeopathic Doctor 629 in the south of London. We have been running about busily to get credit, for the last fortnight, and we start about the 16 October, just a year since we left England. We are going up to the Transvaal and you may expect a long and interesting letter when I come back. I hope you will see it in the same light that I do that if I write every 3 months a 12 page letter, and you write every month a 4 pager, that our reciprocity is mutual and equal! So that henceforth I may expect a letter every mail.
Many happy returns of Mutter and Charlie's birthdays. Love to Grandmamma, Mamma, 630 Nursie etc. etc.
Your affectionate Son
Thornton Lewes.
