Dear Mother, 471
For the first time do I seize the pen to begin a correspondence which is to be lasting, and which affords me much pleasure, and answer your letter to Charlie. We received your letter at St. Moriz in the canton of the Grisons, some three hours walk from Italy. You can imagine how glad we were to get it, as being the first from you. It put a touch to our happiness on the journey.
As I suppose you will like to hear something about the journey, I will give you a short description of it. . . .
I am much obliged to you for your 10 frs. and also for the book of butterflies. In my next I will send you an impression of some butterflies, but can not this time because I am not yet in order from the confusion of the journey. Tell &unknown;Papa&unknown; Father that the old brute of a Dr. Stamm has been convicted of stealing silver spoons, and will therefore of course never return. If you happen to have many letters, stamps from foreign countries, I shall be very glad if you send me them for my collection.
I have nothing more to say. So with kind love and kisses to Papa and yourself, I remain, Dear Mother,
