My dear Blackwood
When I thanked you, on Mrs. Martin's behalf, for Adam Bede, 86 I had no idea, what delight the book itself was to give me. Having been laid up with a bad attack of bronchitis, I have had leisure to read it, and it is long since I have read anything of the kind, which has afforded such unmingled gratification. The writer, man or woman, I am puzzled to divine which, is no common person. The views of life and character are so large, so Shakspearian in their breadth of sympathy, the pathos so natural and searching, the humour so genuine, the style so pure, that one almost forgets it is a book and loses himself in the reality of the incidents. It is not often in these days one meets with a book, which furnishes so many points of sympathy. I am personally most grateful to the author, and to you for sending us the book.
I hoped to have seen you in Edinburgh about this time, but my illness makes this impossible.
