We were all in ecstasies, but Mary Ann's were beyond everything -- but here we met with a sad damper to all our pleasure -- there was a letter from her brother which had been following her from Glasgow, saying that her father had broken his leg the very night she set out, and begging her to come home as soon as possible. We could not let her travel 300 miles alone, as she wished, and after much difficulty in contriving, CB. persuaded her to be easy and stay with us over another day, as the letter said her father was going on well.
