M.A.'s [doings] the last week have been rather sad. Her father gets no better, and is not able to go to the coast as they intended tomorrow; she has been really very poorly. On Tuesday morning I found her well nigh out of her senses with toothache, the wise tooth she thought. I went immediately to T. Wright and got him to come in the afternoon, attended at his own urgent request, by Mr. Bury, as he refused to give the chloroform again without medical sanction, 723 and she would not have it out otherwise. He found out beyond a doubt that the one next the wise tooth was the offender, and no possibility of stopping it. So she began to sniff the chloroform, but it brought on again the violent screaming, and it was only by giving her a second extra-strong dose that perfect unconsciousness could be produced. The tooth was dragged out with a tremendous pull, and then she opened her eyes, and told us she had been listening to [such strains of eloquence.] Her head has felt very queer ever since, and yesterday I found her in bed with a violent headache -- so I fear the chloroform did some little mischief.
