My dear Mrs. Combe
We have not heard of anything dreadful happening to Miss Evans and therefore are quite at a loss to know what has "astounded" your friend. She wrote to us from Weimar a few weeks ago 220 in high health and happiness, said she was enjoying the luxury once more of feeling really well and equal to exertion -- was writing hard, and for relaxation exceedingly enjoyed the society of the few savan[t]s who flourish at Weimar to whom Mr. Lewis introduced her, and especially rejoiced in the acquaintance of Liszt the musician -- the only really inspired man, she says, that she ever saw. You are aware doubtless that she travelled to Weimar under Mr. Lewis's escort, who had been suffering from congestion of brain and required change. At Cologne they met Dr. Brabant, who procured for Marian an interview with Dr. Strauss, which she had long desired. I feel quite sure we should have heard if any mishap had befallen her and therefore, as you say trust that the report is no truer than Mr. Combe's fatal accident at Lucerne.
