My dear Madam
I have some hesitation in writing to you, but the balance of my thoughts is in favour of my doing so. Our personal intercourse would hardly authorise me, but associated as it is with the moral sympathy existing between yourself and so many minds, it offers a plausible excuse. I have condoled with you so sincerely that I can congratulate you, in the deep consciousness of the wonderful weft of pain and pleasure that makes up our emotional existence, and in the assurance that whatever of happiness you have taken up is just as duteous and honest as your sorrow. I have met Mr. Cross at your house and hope to know more of him; from those who do, I hear of nothing but good. My daughters desire their remembrances and hope to call on you soon.
Believe me yours very sincerely
