My dear Sir,
"Middlemarch" is going on most satisfactorily. 412 Smith and Sons increased their number to 1000 ordering the additional 400 to be put in cloth which is being done in Edinburgh. This addition is owing to your giving them their terms no doubt. 413 Some of the Row Houses whose subscription was partially delivered have been in for more which looks as if the general sale is in progress and Mr. Simpson writes me that they are selling copies over the counter in George Street to people who never think of buying an ordinary novel. Two or three days will show if the public are buying but it looks well that Smith and Sons, to whom we could only deliver 400 of their 600 in paper, sent for more yesterday and had 100.
I send you to day's Athenaeum 414 containing a capital review and there is one in the Standard. The tone taken by the Press is most encouraging. There is an article in the Spectator on the Imaginative Powers of Tennyson and G. Eliot in which Middlemarch is alluded to in the highest terms. 415 . . .
I am glad to find you are enjoying yourself. I will write again about the subscriptions on Tuesday.
The apprehension about the Prince 416 is by no means abated.
