London April 8. 1854.
My dear Sir
The pamphlet is being packed and will be sent to the Steamer this afternoon; I trust therefore there may be no delay in your receiving it at the time you count upon.
Your letter of December 10th addressed to Miss Evans contains the conditions on which you proposed that I should publish your article, but it says only with reference to the publication of the pamphlet as one of the conditions; -- "and that I shall not put the pamphlet in circulation until after the publication of the Review." But in a letter, written I think while you were staying in Cambridge Terrace 206, you said, I believe, that provided I supplied you with 'bd a dozen copies of the article at the time the review containing it should be published, you would be quite content to wait several months for the publication of the pamphlet in a separate form. I cannot however find that letter.
To republish in so short a time as a month after publication affords an injurious precedent. The public counts on the same process with other articles for the sake of which the number would otherwise be bought. The sale of the Review is by no means over in a month after publication, and I should be glad to learn that you allowed 2 months to elapse before issuing the pamphlet.
I enclose the printer's bill as forwarded to me by him; the paper I have also charged you at exact cost. I am my dear Sir
Yours very sincerely
John Chapman.
