Dear Sir,
My note of enquiry was not intended in the least degree to imply that I should be loth to receive your article if not a gratuitous one, I merely wished to know the terms intended for the reason alleged. I had quite counted on the article under any circumstances. The mode of payment which you kindly propose is very welcome to me as it accomodates me while enabling me to be of use to you by means of the advertisements. I shall be glad to send any books you may order.
We think it would be best that you should write the article precisely as shall seem to you best without regard to our editorial views on consistency; we will then put the article in the Independent Section. If you feel disposed to add your name to it, we shall be glad to have it.
Dr. Hodgson was quite uninfluenced respecting the treatment of his article, and no word has passed between us as to the propriety of recognizing phrenology in his paper. No considerations of policy influence me in the least in determining how the Science of Phrenology shall be regarded by the Westminster. If my mind were clearly made up as to the possibility of applying practically with success the doctrine of phrenology to prison discipline the review should immediately endorse the recommendation of the system.
