My dear Sir
Quite unknown to me my wife wrote the enclosed letter; 126 she afterwards read it to me and wished to send it to you; I advised her not to do so on the ground that you would consider it biassed testimony and therefore without weight. She then placed it in my hands. On reperusing it to-day I felt that it is written in so just a spirit, and, in the main, is so true in fact that I should not have acted injudiciously in acceding to Mrs. C's wish to send it; and now therefore send it unknown to her. She went to Nottingham today. Though the reasons which induced me to ask her to withold it are still in force, and I feel that I must '91bide my time,'92 there yet seems no necessity for concealment.
Yours very sincerely,
John Chapman.
