John Chapman to GE, London, 16 January 1860
MS: University of London.
Albion St., Hyde Park | 16 January 1860.
Dear Mrs. Lewes
Have you any objection to my republication of the five articles which you contributed to the Westminster Review? 493 I am aware that I gave you back the receipts which conveyed to me the entire copyrights in the articles, and therefore only ask your acquiescence in my republication of them with the understanding and agreement on my part that after paying the expenses of paper, printing, binding, advertizing and commission on publishing from the proceeds of sale I should divide the profit with you. The articles make altogether about 150 Westminster pages, 494 and would not extend therefore beyond a small post 8vo volume which however I should have much pleasure in issuing. It would reflect equal credit on you and on the Westminster -- No, not equal credit for of course it would be chiefly yours; and though the Volume would be small, I hope and believe you would derive some substantial advantage from its publication.
You will not take it as a compliment, but of course I do, that T. C. Sandars and W. B. Donne separately ascribed the article on "Christian Revivals" 495 to you!
Hoping you are both 496 well, I am
Yours sincerely
John Chapman.
