My dear Willie
I had two famous rounds of the Links yesterday and am thankful to say that I am now as fit as can be. When I came in from the Links if anything were wanted to complete my cure it was thoroughly done by the most charming letter from George Eliot. I must keep it beside me to answer before sending it to delight Simpson and you. The substance is that she had been looking over my old letters and cannot resist writing to say how much she owes me, in fact pretty much that she could not have gone on without me. You may conceive this in her language. 542 It is the greatest compliment a man in my position could possibly receive, and that and the context about herself brought warm tears to my eyes.
