Arlington Street, June 6, 1876.
After we came out of the City we went to the Priory. She was not visible, being in the agonies of the wind up and suffering from faceache. We had, however, a most pleasant lunch with Lewes and Miss Helps, daughter of Arthur Helps, who was there. Lewes said his wife was writing with tears in her eyes, and I do not wonder at it. That portion of the proof which I received to-day certainly made me weep. 494 There is a simplicity and power about it that has not been reached in my time.
