My Dear Bill
I had a very pleasant interview with George Eliot and Lewes. They accept with pleasure our proposition if they do not try the shilling number plan, when they would equally publish with us on some other footing. Lewes has a notion that from 5 to 10 thousand may be made by publishing in the shilling numbers, and it is quite possible. I do not in the least wonder at their thinking of such a prize. It is Lewes' wish and he is for making the trial, but she is dead against it and I think will have her way. She fears the nervous excitement of the trial and thinks her story will tell better in a mass. Her canvass is very wide and she could extend the story to anything.
She is a fine character -- all my former good opinion of her is restored. I am sure I cannot be mistaken both in her language and the expression of her face.
If you write to me tomorrow address to Knebworth; after that to Mount Felix, Walton on Thames. . . .
I have nearly lost the post, having fallen asleep before the fire after my cold drive in a Handsome to Holly Lodge.
