My dear Willie
I inclose George Eliot's letter and copy of my answer. She is evidently getting all right and will I hope soon shake off the pretended sympathisers who encourage morbid notions about poor Lewes' memory. Have some talk with Langford about the note we should put in as to the cause of the delay. Perhaps domestic sorrow on the author's part will be the best phrase. Qu'e2 ourselves I do not care what we say, the thing is to avoid vexing her by seeming to shirk the question or rouse the press by assuming too much. Return her letter to me as I should have it beside me when I write to America.
I inclose Kinglake's note. The cold today is infernal and I hope you have it better.
