We do not choose to part with the letter you ask to see but as the handwriting will satisfy you enclosed is the last note we have received from George Eliot which please send back to me by return.
The note now enclosed is in the handwriting of the M.S.S. of Clerical Scenes and Adam Bede and is from the author of these works with whom we have all along corresponded and to whom we have paid large sums of money and will pay much more.
He is more annoyed at the imputations on his publishers than my brother (my partner) and I, as we cannot resist laughing at the absurdity of the whole thing. At the same time we must say that it is only what we hear of the general excellence and benevolence of your character that induces us to hold any communication with you at all after the unwarrantable manner in which you have replied to our distinct assertion of a fact. for brother and self your Obedient Servant

My brother and I constitute the firm of Wm. Blackwood and Sons. George Eliot does not wish to be known and although it is not at all likely that the hand is known to any of your neighbours the inclosed is only for your inspection.
