My Dear Lewes
Let the arrangement for the new Novel be as you proposed in your letter of 21st August viz. a royalty of 2/- per copy sold on each 5/- part in the original form and an equivalent royalty on copies in cheaper editions. Half yearly accounts.
The 8 five shilling parts sewn would naturally sell for 42/- when bound in volumes which will about cover the difference in expence between sewing and binding. I am very sanguine that we shall run a great coup. Your American arrangement rather alarms me and unless you have got a very large sum I should have advised against it. The purport and extracts from story will leak into this country in spite of our teeth and so take away in some degree the freshness from our parts before they are published.
Still the work so far as I have seen it is so tremendously good and finished that perhaps the more that is whispered and known about it the better.
We have lovely weather here now and anything more delightful than the bathe in the Witch lake yesterday it would be difficult to imagine.
