My dear Lewes
The arrival of the two volumes was a great event in 45 George St. and my nephew tells me they were after a careful inspection carried off to the fire proof room in the loving arms of Simpson.
The Proofs now begin to arrive here and I wait instructions from Mrs. Lewes or you as to times and quantities in which she wishes them sent to her. Proof of the first sixty four pages is what I have got and of course I could not resist reading at once. To read was to renew pleasure and I found my first impression of the wonderful skill and power of the opening more confirmed.
We have said nothing directly about terms but my understanding, subject to your approval, is that we should begin at the same price and pay the same lordship as with Middlemarch.
My nephew as well as my wife and daughter, who have had the privilege of looking into these 64 pages, are as much delighted as I am. I hope Mrs. Lewes is pretty well and that the sending off these two volumes of Daniel Deronda has been a relief to her. Give her my best regards and congratulations to her.
