October 25/77.
My Dear Lewes
We now beg to make the following offer for the library edition of the Works of George Eliot now in preparation in nineteen volumes to sell nominally at 5/- per volume. On the 17 prose volumes we propose to pay a lordship of 1/1'bd on each copy of every volume sold after the first 500, and on the two volumes of Poetry, The Spanish Gipsy and Jubal, a lordship of 1/6 and 1/8 respectively on the same condition of a first free sale of 500 copies.
In the letter accompanying this I have further explained the principle on which this offer is made and we hope it may meet Mrs. Lewes' views and yours.
It is about what can be afforded on this edition of the books but we are ready to do anything we possibly can to meet your ideas in the matter.
yours most sincerely
John Blackwood
Wm Blackwood and Sons.
G. H. Lewes Esq.
