The Burlington May 24/73.
My dear Lewes
On Wednesday in Edinburgh I got a telegram to say that General Steuart 790 was dangerously ill and before I could reach Hastings on Thursday my dear old friend was gone. Congestion of the lungs was the complaint and the decline at last was very sudden.
I shall be in town for some days and I hope to find you both well. I have famous news of the progress of Middlemarch to give.
The letter which accompanies this has been a weight upon my mind for some time but I think Mrs. Lewes and you will appreciate the reluctance with which I wrote it and why I have been so long about it.
