George Street, | Edinburgh.
January 6/73.
My Dear Lewes
There is still a sale of the 42/- Middlemarch going on, but it is small and obviously will never come to anything. We think therefore that we should as soon as possible get out a 21/- edition. We would make this one rather smaller and thinner paper than the first edition so as to look different.
For such edition we propose to pay you a lordship of 5/- on each copy sold and I hope this will meet your views.
The binding of the 4 volumes will be a heavy item, 696 but that number of volumes bound will make a handsome book and not look dear.
It will take some time to get out the new edition, especially in the dilapidated state of our Printing Office, but if we find we cannot get on fast enough we shall send some of the volumes up to London.
Thank Mrs. Lewes for her pleasant letter and believe me
always yours truly
John Blackwood.
G. H. Lewes Esq.
