My Dear Lewes
I inclose two bills at 6 and 9 mos. for £1097-16-11, each being half yearly settlement for Middlemarch as per former and accompanying memorandum. You will see that I have only taken half of the discount allowed to Smith off your amount. In some way or other I have very little doubt we would have allowed him 5 per cent discount.
Mr. Simpson is pressing the man who collected the Middlemarch advertiser 697 for settlement, and you shall hear whenever we get his account. You inquire about anything from Berlin, but you made that arrangement yourself and we understood that the settlement was to be with you. 698 We do not know what your lordship was to be, but there ought to have been something by this time. The Times is too late with its reviews. It is a great mistake, especially when the reviews are not of such weight and merit as to justify delay for consideration.
I am sorry to see by Mrs. Lewes' letter that the year has opened upon her in such an invalid state. We have had some really fine days of late and I hope they have helped to put her all right. You seem very lively and busy.
You ask whether I am coming up to London soon. I am not sure but I think it very possible and to have a talk with you about [the] Key to All the Mythologies or any other work would be a strong inducement to get into "The Flying Scotchman," the stoker's name for the train that goes between London and Edinburgh in little more than 9 hours!
