My Dear Lewes
I came from the country 945 today and very soon after I arrived I had the pleasure of receiving your note with the packet from G. Eliot and the Seaside Studies.
I did not know that there was any particular call for me to read Janet at once, but it was an immense relief to turn to her from the other mass of papers lying on the table. Part III is admirable. Although Parts 1 and 2 did not exactly hit my taste, my expectations of what was to come were very highly raised, and they are now in the process of being more than answered. The interest rises very high and the first step to a community of feeling between Tryan and Janet is beautifully and most skilfully managed. Towards the close of the part I was in a horrid funk for poor Janet and like her self felt rather relieved when the door was closed upon her. 946
I am only in town for a day but I shall write G. Eliot with the proof from the country. Address here however.
In the meantime I have the pleasure of making a cheque £44, being £20 in acknowledgment of Seaside Studies Part III and 24£ for Janet Part II.
I am afraid you will find Richmond rather hot and dusty at present but with such relaxations as the occasional eye of a cuttle fish to dissect, I daresay you will be able to rub on.
