Text: Blackwood Letter Book. Hitherto unpublished.
Edinburgh December 31st 1858.
My Dear Lewis
I enclose a cheque £100 being the first instalment for the Physiology of Common Life.
We have sent out the first part largely on sale but as yet can form no guess as to the probable sale. Indeed we will not have anything like a fair means of judging for a month or two.
Along with this I send the proof of the next two parts arranged as you proposed. You will see that they rather exceed the quantity we fixed upon for each number, but it is no disadvantage to have the early parts portly.
It is not like so knowing a party as you to suggest so dangerous a preface as that proposed for G.E. The single sentence is fully as doubtful a step as the larger preface.
With all good wishes for the year that is opening upon us, I am
Ever yours Truly
John Blackwood.
G. H. Lewis Esq.
