My dear Lewes
I had the pleasure of hearing from Mr. Langford yesterday that in addition to the subscription of which I wrote to you on Saturday, Mudie had taken 200 and would take 500 if we would give the extra percentage. I wrote to give it and would have written to tell you the good news had I not thought it probable you might have heard it at the Row. 366
I think very little of the subscription to Books unless in the case of a succession of Books similar in character by the same author. Then the subscribers can really form a good estimate as the orders are up from the country, but in most other cases unless there has been a regular clamour about the forthcoming Book the subscription is no index although it is always pleasant to see it large. A month ago we subscribed about 600 of Lord St. Leonards Handy Book 367 and have since sold 15000!
I have the pleasure of enclosing a cheque £75 being payment in full for the first edition of the Sea-Side Studies as agreed. The cancel does not matter. We take such things as the chance of War.
In making the arrangement for your Book and for Clerical Scenes I should have named a date for payment and I had not intended to pay until six months after publication as is usual, but let me know if G.E. wishes or expects payment at once.
