My Dear Lewes
I would with pleasure assent to the proposed arrangement for the simultaneous publication of Lisa in America but I am afraid it would be a breach in our agreement with the American Reprinters of the Magazine to whom we are bound to send early Sheets.
I do not think that letting another publisher have the start of them with Lisa would do the reprint the slightest harm, but they would be pretty sure to make a pretence of it and we have at present quite sufficient difficulty in getting them to pay up. If you can get any material sum from the Americans do not consider me at all, as although I admire the Poem so much I shall not be in the least disappointed although it should be published elsewhere.
It was the knowledge that you were going abroad so soon that made me think you wished the Poem published at once. I hope you will have a famous expedition and a letter or two will be most welcome. I intended to have worked all day but an insinuating Golfer has come in and is carrying me off to the Links at once.
