My Dear Lewes
Your preface is capital, really quite a model. I was so much struck with its neatness and clearness that Aytoun, who is a considerable artist at such things, coming into my room, I handed it to him saying, There is a thing that you could not beat in its way. -- He quite agreed with me. -- I shall be glad to see the whole work when you are ready to send it down.
George Eliot will think that I am forgetting him but I am not. I think a good deal about Adam Bede every day. There being no absolute necessity for hurry in the reperusal, I have thought it better both for him and me to delay until I was a little out of my present turmoil of occupation. Tomorrow night the Magazine will be off my hands for the month, and in a few days I shall be able to write at length about the excellent Adam.
I send you the first number of Tales from the Magazine. I thought of starting the scheme ten years ago and delayed for what reason I do not know. It has been much in my mind during the last fortnight and should be a great success. Let me know what you think.
I shall not forget to send you proof of the next part of "Food" in time. When do you intend to start?
