George Street | Edinburgh December 21/77.
My Dear Lewes
I was delighted to get your note the other day with such pleasant accounts of Mrs. Lewes and I hope the approaching holiday time will find you both well and able to enjoy the congratulations of your friends.
I had a call today from Mrs. Wm. Smith who inquired for and sent most warm remembrances to you both. She is living with a niece and her husband, Mr. Constable, and I am happy to say looks well. I almost hesitated to send the enclosed for Mrs. Lewes as it may be from some "curious impertinent" but from the terms in which it is enclosed have deemed it best to forward it to you.
Thanks for your hint about Souvenirs of Madm. D'Agoult which I have sent for.
The Wars and possibilities of Wars fill one with uneasiness. I hope devoutly that we may be able to steer safely through it all. That France should be so helpless is a great embarrassment to all arrangements. What a strange turn that is when we think of past wars and their History.
Mr. Gathorne Hardy 791 was in Edinburgh for a banquet last week and stayed with us for a couple of days. I am happy to say that our Minister of War is I think a man who may be trusted at the helm. He is a very vigorous able man and also full of life and fun. We were all greatly taken with him.
Willie joins me in all good wishes and believe me
ever yours truly
(signed) John Blackwood.
Our weather is singularly mild and my wife and daughter are rejoicing in their rides.
