My dear Lewes
By a letter from Langford today I see that you and he propose we should send Deronda to the weekly press from here on the 25th and to the Daily Press on the 27th, but so many of the weekly are connected with the Daily Press that I do not think it would be safe to make the distinction. So if you agree I propose to post all the Press copies from this on the 25th with a request that reviews should not appear before Saturday. I hope Mrs. Lewes is pretty well and that I shall soon be gladened by the sight of Volume 3.
A very clever young contributor of mine Julian Sturgis 387 has asked me for an introduction to Mrs. Lewes and you but I hesitate about intruding upon her at present. He is an immense favourite of mine and you will I am sure be charmed with him. He is American by birth but I could not point out a better type of what Eton and Oxford can produce than this young fellow.
I had a most amusing letter from Lockhart yesterday and he excuses himself for not having sent Christmas greetings because he did not like to send his "good wishes" without a specimen of his "good works." He will I think be able to take the field with a novel in spring.

I wonder that blunder of putting letters into wrong envelopes does not occur oftener.
