My Dear Lewes
I had to go out of Town this morning and have only time to write a line before post hour to say that I read Book Six last night and have unbounded congratulations to send to Mrs. Lewes. She is A Magician. It is a Poem, a Drama, and a Grand Novel.
One cannot rightly read Deronda while people are talking and moving about, so I did not get fairly begun until I went to my dressing room where it kept me reading, thinking, and admiring until past three a.m. The book is A Work in itself, and I do not wonder at the creator of such work feeling exhausted and nervous, but she may dismiss all anxiety as to what the world will think and feel satisfied that she has transcendently carried out her purpose.
There is no doubt about the marvellous Mordecai and oh that Cohen family! The whole tribe of Israel should fall down and worship her. I must read again before venturing to write to her. When I finished the part at 'bd past three I grudged very much not being able to go with Deronda to see his Mother. The suspense is great.
