My Dear Lewes
I have the pleasure of enclosing a cheque £807.11/- being £785.13/- on account of Middlemarch and £21.18/- on account Spanish Gypsy as per accompanying Memorandum.
Nothing could be more satisfactory than Middlemarch and the continued sale of the 21/- edition is a grand triumph.
I hope the New Year has opened pleasantly to Mrs. Lewes and you and that it will prove one of health and happiness to you both.
We are all well except Willie who, unlucky fellow that he is, still is lame from a hunting accident he met with nearly three months ago. However his general health is excellent and the doctor says that the bruise is mending as well, but also I should say as slowly, as could be expected. A bruised ankle and foot is always a tedious thing.
However I shall write to Mrs. Lewes in a day or two with any news I can think of. In the meantime with best regards to her and you, I am
