My dear Lewes
I had the pleasure of receiving your note to-day and am glad to know that you have got into your new house which will I hope do Mrs. Lewes all the good in the world. Have you a garden? Houses spring up so fast about the Regents Park that I hardly know whether to think of you as in the Country or the Town.
I am vexed to hear that your son has failed in his examination and caused you so much anxiety but if he is not too confident I feel pretty sure he will ultimately do well, and a clever active young fellow like him may probably do better on his own hook than in the routine of any government service.
You should have heard from me if I had any good news to give of the sales of the 6/ edition of the novels but a statement will be made out and sent to you after the Turn of the Year. The failure of this 6/ edition is very annoying, and that Clerical Scenes, of which there had been no previous large sale, should not sell in this shape is most astonishing.
What are you both about? I hope G.E. is thinking of something new. With best regards to her believe me
